With over one hundred years of coffee production tradition, in recent years the Mattos Family became specialized in the production of specialty coffees. With the arrival of this new modality, the property inserted (social, environmental and technological) practices to maintain a sustainable specialty coffee production. The Fazenda Braúna plantations are in areas between 900 and 1100 meters high. The coffee plantations are all geo-positioned.

Social responsibility

Concern with the health and work conditions of Fazenda Braúna's employees led to the implementation of the Occupational Health Medical Control Program and of the Environmental Risk Prevention Program in the 90s. These programs are aimed at improving the health and work environment of the employees and their families, most of whom live in the Farm, in homes with areas in which they can have vegetable gardens and raise small animals. Fazenda Braúna is known for respecting Brazilian labor laws, aware of its social responsibility.

Environmental preservation

Investments in the environment and its preservation are points of honor for the owners of Fazenda Braúna, where the Atlantic Rain Forest occupies more than 30% of the Farm's acreage. The coffee plantation areas are separate from the Rain Forest, forming an ecological corridor that unite them and where monkeys, pacas, pumas, wolves and other wild animals.

Native birds, including some that are considered endangered species, can be easily seen in Fazenda Braúna's forests. That is only possible as a result of the intense work to raise the dwellers awareness to the importance of preserving local plants and animals. Fazenda Braúna has several springs, waterfalls and rivers that are protected by maintaining and restoring the ciliary woods.

To preserve the river system, a water recycling system was devised to recycle the water used in preparing coffee, which is reused in the plantations and does not pollute the environment.

Coffee processing system

Coffees are picked in their optimum maturation point and are immediately transferred to be processed. During processing, the dry, green and cherry beans are separated. The cherry beans are pulped in special equipment. The cherry beans will become specialty coffees at the end of the process. During the drying phase, cemented terraces and mechanical dryers are used, always adopting intervals for the coffee to rest, and for the beans to be dried under perfect conditions.

Concern with quality

Reports are issued daily to monitor the origin and the whole path covered by the beans until the coffee is sorted, providing total traceability of the lots produced at the Farm, which is part of the system adopted by Fazenda Braúna to demonstrate its high commitment level to its partners, clients and coworkers.
